By nature, web cams don't have the best lenses. Most likely they don't have a zoom lens, and not high resolution. They're basically "just camera enough" to get the job done. Depending on the connections you have, you may be able to hook a camcorder into your computer.
In the end, I would just get a cheapy web cam and invest in a quality still camera. The webcam I used for my Skype session was only $20 at Target.

I totally agree with Sean. Web cams are inexpensive. And you can get a decent digital camera for under $200 and a Flip Video for under $150.
